Maps and Mapping Projects

The idea for the map below came from the neighborhood discussions that produced the Town of Sand Lake's first Historic District Overlay.

RESOLUTION #2019-11-102 Approval of Historic District Overlay

The purpose of this district is to promote the preservation and enhancement of historic properties located within the Town of Sand Lake. The potential properties (at least over 100 years old) to be included in the Historic District Overlay are identified as:

  • On Route 43, from the Sand Lake Center for the Arts and 2883 NY 43 to the intersection with Route 66 at Taborton Road.
  • Taborton Road from Route 43/66 to Oak Hill Road.
  • Routes 43/66 from Taborton Road to 2669 Routes 43/66.
  • Sand Lake Union Cemetery.
  • The entirety of Schumann Road.
  • Glass Lake Road from Route 43/66 to Pillars Lane.
  • Lower Teal Road (17 and 19 Teal Road)

It was always the intention that this particular overlay would be a model for others, hopefully encouraging other neighborhoods to get together and, as the resolution states, "promote the preservation and enhancement of historic properties located within the Town of Sand Lake." My hope is this map can help in that process and also be a resource for people interested in moving to Sand Lake.

The bases for this map were the Sand Lake Historical Society's "House Tour" guides from 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987 and 1990. Using the guides along with Google "Street View," I was able to identify and tag 75 sites. I strongly encourage anyone who would like to add to the map, either with a new building or with more information on an existing item, to get in touch with me. Please note that this particular project currently is limited to buildings at least 100 years old.

Thank you, Wayland (Bud) Whitney, Member and Trustee, Sand Lake Historical Society
